Brighton football player Traice Davis died in a Nov. 5 car wreck, principal Brian Crowson confirmed to The Commercial Appeal on Nov. 7.
“Traice Davis was the kind of athlete who didn’t just play football and wrestling, he lived them,” said Crowson in a statement to The Commercial Appeal. “He showed up early and he kept going when others would stop. He made the people around him tougher and better, simply because he refused to give anything less than his all.”
Davis, a 17-year-old senior, was a wide receiver on the football team, and played a part in the Cardinals (3-7) reaching the TSSAA football playoffs. The team remains committed to their Class 5A opening-round game at Kirkwood (8-2) scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 7, and plans to play in honor of Davis.
“Traice Davis is a wonderful young man and he is genuinely loved by EVERYONE around him,” wrote coach Keith Setler Nov. 6 on his Facebook account. “We enter Friday’s contest with the blessing of the Davis family and we plan to honor them in our play. The entirety of our being is focused on praying for the Davis family and lifting them up.”
Davis, who also wrestled for Brighton, is the second Memphis-area football player to die this season, following Bolton’s Joshua Henderson who died July 26 following heat stroke complications.
“Traice’s time here feels far too short, but what he did with it was powerful,” Crowson said. “He left a mark on his teammates, his coaches, his school, and his community. We’ll carry with us how he showed up: full of heart, full of drive, full of courage. He will always be a part of our Cardinal family and us individually.”
