Army football has lost a major cog in its coaching leadership as defensive coordinator Nate Woody is headed for the same job at the University of Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting Woody will replace UC defensive coordinator Tyson Veidt, who is taking a new job as linebackers coach position at Penn State. Veidt worked with new Nittany Lions head coach Matt Campbell at both Toledo and Iowa State.
Woody has served as defensive coordinator under Army head coach Jeff Monken for the past six seasons (2020-25) — the Black Knights' defense ranked in the FBS top-15 rankings three times during that span.
With just one Football Bowl Subdivision game remaining for the 2025 season, Army ranks nationally No. 43 in total defense (343.5 yards per game); No. 40 in scoring defense (21.62 per game); No. 48 in red zone defense (.812); and, No. 27 in passing yards allowed (190.4).
Army went 12-2 in 2024, winning the American Conference and Independence Bowl. That season, the Black Knights ranked No. 8 in total defense (297.9 yards per game); No. 4 in scoring defense (15.5); No. 16 in rushing defense (112 yards per game); No. 1 in red zone defense (.600); No. 23 in first downs defense (229 allowed); and, No 20 in fourth-down conversion percentage (.425).
While at West Point, Woody has coached a handful of defensive players who have played in the NFL: defensive back Elijah Riley; and, linebackers Cole Christiansen, Jon Rhattigan, Andre Carter and Jimmy Ciarlo. Additional defenders who have appeared in postseason all-star games and showcases include linebacker Leo Lowin; defensive back No Nicolas-Paul; lineman Nolan Cockrill.
Woody was preceded as Army defensive coordinator by John Loose (2019) and Jay Bateman (2014-18) – the latter was D.C. at North Carolina (2019-21), inside linebackers coach at Florida (2022-23), D.C. at Texas A&M (2024-25) and recently took the D.C. job at Kentucky.
Former Army assistant coach Cort Braswell is a linebackers coach for the Bearcats.
A 1984 graduate of Wofford College, Woody was defensive coordinator at his alma mater from 2000-12, at Appalachian State (2013-17) and Georgia Tech (2018). He was a defensive analyst for Michigan for one season before headed to West Point.
