Michigan football lands Smith Snowden, game-changing DB from Utah

Michigan football continues its heater in the transfer portal.

Former Utah defensive back Smith Snowden announced on social media he is transferring to Michigan on Tuesday, Jan. 13. A two-way player before moving to defense full time, Snowden is a potential game-changing player.

Snowden lined up all over the field in 2025, playing 299 snaps at slot corner, 275 at boundary, 35 in the box and 22 at free safety, according to Pro Football Focus.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound defensive back had 37 tackles, nine pass breakups and a pair of interceptions for the Utes this past season on his way to being named to the All-Big 12 second-team. In 2024, he had 48 total tackles (four for loss) to go with eight passes defended and a pair of interceptions.

He played a pair of games on offense, too, finishing with eight carries for 40 yards and a touchdown and 13 catches for 57 yards, operating primarily as a target at or behind the line of scrimmage. Snowden is the 14th player to join U-M in the transfer portal and the fourth former player from Utah, joining edge John Henry Daley, defensive tackle Jonah Lea’ea and wide receiver JJ Buchanan.

The Lehi, Utah, native will have one year of eligibility left in college and play for his former coach, Kyle Whittingham.
