LSU football signed another transfer portal quarterback on Wednesday, adding former USC passer Husan Longstreet.

Longstreet is the sixth-ranked quarterback in the transfer portal, per 247Sports, and signed with the Trojans as a five-star recruit in their 2025 recruiting class.

The idea of LSU signing Longstreet has been heavily discussed in the media since he announced his decision to transfer late last week, but the circumstances have since changed dramatically. When it was first announced that Longstreet would be visiting LSU, talks with the Tigers‘ new transfer quarterback, Sam Leavitt, had reportedly stalled. It seemed Longstreet might be LSU’s best option to take over the starting role next season — a situation that could have ended in disaster, given his lack of experience.

Now, LSU has signed Leavitt, solidifying the Tigers’ starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Longstreet will now compete with recent LSU signee and former Elon quarterback Landen Clark for the Tigers’ backup role.

This also provides two other key elements previously missing from the Tigers’ quarterback room: depth and a succession plan. LSU entered the transfer portal window without a single scholarship quarterback on the roster, so even if they managed to sign Leavitt, they didn’t have a backup for if he went down. Now, Kiffin and his offensive staff have Longstreet and Clark to compete for the backup role in 2026 and the starting spot in 2027. Now, there’s a full-fledged plan at quarterback, an impressive feat, given the limited time the Tigers’ staff had to put the room together.
