NMSU signs a power conference running back from the Big Ten Conference

New Mexico State is hoping its new running back can bolster its rushing attack.
That running back is Iowa‘s Terrell Washington Jr., who announced his transfer to the Aggies on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Washington Jr. is now the second running back to join NM State from the transfer portal after Delaware State’s James Jones.

Washington Jr. was with the Hawkeyes for the past three seasons, tallying 233 total yards from 2023-25 and one receiving touchdown. He rushed for 98 yards on 28 carries and caught four passes for 18 yards in 2025, and also returned four kickoffs. According to his Iowa biography, Washington Jr. earned the Hawkeyes’ “Hustle Award” on offense in 2025.
Washington had a decorated high school career at Wylie East High School (Texas) from 2019-22. He was the District 7-5A Division I Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, a second-team All-District 7-5A D-I quarterback as a sophomore, a first-team All-District 7-5A D-I running back as a junior and the District 9-6A MVP as a senior. He also ran track and recorded 100-meter times of 11.52, 11.55, and 11.60 seconds as a junior.
On3 reported on Jan. 3 that Washington Jr. would visit NM State during the week of Jan. 5. Now, he has joined the Aggies. After receiving sparse playing time at Iowa, he’ll hope to showcase his talents more in Las Cruces.
