MANHATTAN — Kansas State football running back Dylan Edwards will miss the rest of the regular season, use his redshirt and enter the transfer portal, according to a national report.

Pete Nakos, a college football insider for On3 Sports, reported on Friday, Nov. 7, that Edwards will sit after only appearing in four games this season with what has been described by Wildcats coach Chris Klieman as a leg injury. Shortly after initial reports of his redshirt, Nakos followed by saying that Edwards will enter the transfer portal.

Thus would end a frustrating year for a Kansas State running back who entered the year with much promise as Avery Johnson’s partner-in-crime in the backfield. He was injured before taking an offensive snap in Week 0’s loss to Iowa State in Ireland. The lone game he played extended time and made an impact came in Sept. 27’s win over UCF, in which he rushed for 166 yards and a touchdown.

Johnson’s absence has been impactful on Kansas State, as it was expected by many to compete for a Big 12 championship and possibly a spot in the College Football Playoff. Instead, it is 4-5 overall, fighting for bowl eligibility and is on the verge of having a season without a 1,000-yard rusher since 2020. Joe Jackson leads the team with 407 rushing yards.

By redshirting and only appearing in four games, Edwards will maintain a year of eligibility. He played 12 games at Colorado in 2023 and played in 12 in 2024, his debut season with the Wildcats. He will have two available years, whether he opts to return to K-State or play elsewhere.

Dylan Edwards injury: What Chris Klieman said about his running back

Klieman’s most recent comments regarding Edwards’ injury status came on Oct. 20, ahead of the Wildcats’ loss to Texas Tech.

“There’s something going on with the lower extremity that we continue to do imaging on,” Klieman said Monday, Oct. 27. “The imaging we’ve received (last week) says that it wasn’t healed. If it’s not healed, he is not gonna play. We’re not gonna put him out there.”

Klieman said at the time that he and Edwards had yet to discuss the possibility of redshirting.

“Dylan wants to play, but his body’s not there yet,” Klieman said. “We’ll have to revisit that, but I want to just make sure the kid gets healthy. That’s the most important thing for me is that he gets healthy.”

Apparently, the two have revisited his redshirt status, and the decision has been made to shut him down.
