Kevin Burke joins Chris Kappas on Mount Union football coaching staff

ALLIANCE — Another familiar face will be on the Mount Union football team’s coaching staff next season.

Former Purple Raiders quarterback Kevin Burke has been named offensive coordinator. He joins Chris Kappas, who resigned as Louisville High School’s head coach this month to become Mount Union’s defensive coordinator.

Burke spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I California-Davis. He was Mount Union’s quarterbacks coach in 2021 and also coached at Case Western Reserve.

Two-time Gagliardi Trophy winner Kevin Burke helped lead Mount Union to a nail-biting win over John Carroll in 2014.

Burke helped lead the Purple Raiders to a national title in 2012 and became the first back-to-back winner of the Gagliardi Trophy as the top all-around player in Division III. He holds the school record for total offense in a season with 5,011 yards in 2014. His 14,572 career yards of total offense ranks No. 2 in school history.

“It’s impossible to put into words what this program and what this opportunity means to me,” Burke said in a statement. “I can’t wait to pour my heart and soul into this place and these players once again. With these coaches, our support staff, the alumni and the entire community, there’s no ceiling to what these players can accomplish.”

Burke and Kappas replace previous coordinators Daryl Ely and Junior Collins. who joined the coaching staff at Connecticut under new head coach and former Purple Raider Jason Candle.
