Miami‘s defense has been a key factor in the Hurricanes‘ run to the College Football Playoff national championship game.
First-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman’s aggressive style, led by pass-rush monsters Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor, has made life difficult for opposing quarterbacks. And it’s a style that will be familiar to Indiana coach Curt Cignetti.
Hetherman worked for Cignetti as James Madison‘s defensive coordinator from 2019-21 and was named AFCA FCS Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021. In 2021, JMU’s defense was second in the nation in yards per game (275.2) and first in turnovers forced (31) as the Dukes went 12-2 and reached the FCS semifinals.
Hetherman then left to be Rutgers’ linebackers coach for two seasons before a year as Minnesota defensive coordinator prior to arriving in Coral Gables. Cignetti promoted Bryant Haines to defensive coordinator, and since then Haines followed Cignetti to Indiana and has developed a reputation as one of the top assistant coaches in college football and received a lucrative contract extension to stay with Cignetti.
And while Hetherman’s defense will be familiar to Cignetti, Indiana’s offense, which is run by former JMU assistant Mike Shanahan won’t be foreign to Hetherman either.
“We’ve evolved offensively. Terminology has changed. We do things differently. But his scheme has, too,” Cignetti said Monday, Jan. 12. “Now, philosophically, you know, in terms of what we think is important, him and I, that hasn’t changed. He’s going to create havoc up front, stop the run, TFLs, sacks. They got 47 sacks on the year. He’s going to attack. The way he goes about it is a little different than the way he went about it at JMU. But the way we go about it offensively is a little different, too. So I’ve got a lot of respect for Corey. He did a tremendous job. I hated to see him go. I hold him in very high regard.”
Hetherman’s Hurricanes ranked No. 11 in total defense this season and will need to be on top of their game to slow down the high-powered Hoosiers, who have bludgeoned CFP opponents Alabama (38-3) and Oregon (56-22) on the way to the national title game.
“He’s one of the best football coaches I’ve ever been around,” Cignetti said. “His day-in-and-day-out intensity and his commitment to the game is unparalleled. But I was fortunate to have Bryant Haines on my staff who was ready to step into that role. And they’re a little different because they’re different people. And Bryant likes to do a lot of the different things, but we do them well. But the philosophy is still the same in terms of, it all starts up front. Statistically, since Bryant’s taken over, it’s about like it was when Corey was the coordinator. We’re always in the top five in total defense, one or two against the run, very high in TFLs and sacks. But in terms of the schematics — you know, man, zone, the kind of blitzes, the fronts — we’ve changed a little bit. And I’ve seen Corey change based on what I’m seeing on tape.”
Dueling defensive coordinators, best friends: Bryant Haines was in Corey Hetherman’s wedding
The defensive coordinators in Monday’s national championship game are best friends having worked together under Cignetti at James Madison. In fact, Haines was in Hetherman’s wedding.
