Susan Moore High School football junior running back and linebacker Max Cervantes suffered a neck injury in the first half of a 38-14 AHSAA first-round playoff loss to Tuscaloosa Academy Friday, Nov. 7.
Cervantes went down on a tackle attempt, and medical staff screwed off Cervantes’ helmet, placed him on a stretcher and took him off the field in an ambulance.
Susan Moore football coach Wes Patterson confirmed that Cervantes "had all movement in all his extremities on the field."
"He just had some tingling in the neck and the fingers, so out of precaution, they wanted to take him, which is always the right call," Patterson said. "But we got updated that he's good."
The Susan Moore football team knelt before holding a group prayer for Cervantes as he was taken off the field.
Cervantes came into Friday's game with 533 rushing yards and four touchdowns for Susan Moore, per MaxPreps. He finished Friday's game against Tuscaloosa Academy with seven carries for 27 yards.
