The final chapter of former Ohio State quarterback Devin Brown will be coming to a close soon, and now we know where that chapter will be written. Brown is heading home to Utah after signing with FCS Weber State.
The former Buckeye QB will be remembered as one of the most loyal players ever to wear the Scarlet and Gray. In the era of the transfer portal and NIL, players often leave as soon as a little adversity shows up or a better offer is presented. Brown came to Ohio State as a four-star prospect. He was a top 50 player nationally as well as the No. 5-ranked quarterback in the 2022 class according to 27Sports composite rankings. However, Brown could never quite find his footing in Columbus, always playing bridesmaid and never the bride. In his one opportunity to show what he could do as a starter, he would be injured early in the second quarter in what would turn out to be a loss to Missouri in the 2023 Cotton Bowl Classic. The following year, Ryan Day would bring in Will Howard, and the rest was history.
Brown famously stayed with his Buckeye teammates through the championship run in 2024 as a backup, even though the easy thing would’ve been to jump ship to head for greener pastures. After Ohio State hoisted the trophy, Brown did indeed transfer, but he did so in a way that cemented his legacy as a Buckeye and endeared himself to fans, even though he didn’t contribute significantly on the field.
The transfer to Cal didn’t turn out as expected, as Brown was thrown another curveball when he was beat out by a true freshman, five-star Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Heading to the portal one more time, he was thrown a bone when his former high school coach, Eric Kjar, was named the head coach at Weber State in Utah. With just one year of eligibility remaining, Brown will be reunited with a familiar face and a chance to play close to family and friends.
