Another Penn State running back has departed Happy Valley.
Corey Smith announced his decision to transfer to Toledo today, with three years of eligibility remaining.
Smith was formerly a four star recruit in the class of 2024 and was ranked as the No 3 overall player in the state of Wisconsin and the No. 26 overall running back in the class. He committed to the Nittany Lions in April of 2023, with schools such as Tennessee and Wisconsin also in the race to sign him.
Smith took a redshirt his freshman year, sitting behind both Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. He was still able to play in four games. Perhaps his finest moment as a Nittany Lion came in his debut, when he had 95 yards on six carries, which included a 78 yard run that was the longest of Penn State's season.
While he finished that year with 152 rushing yards, he did not get much playing time in 2025. In fact, he turned into more of a kick return specialist for the squad, having a long of 34 yards against Northwestern.
Before transferring, he did have nine carries in the Pinstripe Bowl, and ended up finishing his Penn State career with 182 total rushing yards and a single touchdown against Maryland in 2024.
He is the second Penn State player to transfer to Toledo, joining linebacker Kari Jackson, and is also the second Penn State running back to transfer after Jabree Wallace-Coleman.
