Indiana's Fernando Mendoza Speaks Out on Homecoming Before Miami Game

Fernando Mendoza will take the field Monday night just miles from where he grew up, leading the Indiana Hoosiers into the College Football Playoff national championship against the Miami Hurricanes.

Mendoza’s path back to South Florida took several turns. Miami showed interest after he entered the transfer portal last offseason, but he chose Indiana for family reasons and to play alongside his younger brother and redshirt freshman, Alberto.

His mother, Elsa, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis nearly two decades ago, per The Athletic’s Grace Rayner, which also factored in Mendoza’s decision so he could attend their games more easily.

On Saturday, the former Columbus High standout and 2025 Heisman Trophy winner downplayed the personal nature of his return to Miami during his first media availability ahead of the title game.

“I can be selfish, saying, ‘Oh, it’s Miami, it’s a homecoming’ and stuff like that, but in reality, all that matters is the football game,” Mendoza said. “Whether we win or lose this football game, I know that I’m going to be able to sleep, rest at night knowing I did everything possible to prepare for this game, and everything possible in order to help the Hoosiers win this game.”

Although Mendoza grew up a Hurricanes fan, the Hoosiers signal caller made it clear his focus has shifted.

“Although it means a lot to myself, being from Miami, having family from Miami, growing up a University of Miami fan, it’s the national championship,” Mendoza said. “It means so much for Bloomington, it means so much for my teammates. It would mean so much for everybody around.

“I don’t want to put the spotlight on myself, but on everybody.”

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti, who recruited Mendoza from Cal, said there was never a doubt in his mind about the quarterback’s potential.

“I felt extremely strong about Fernando,” Cignetti said. “I knew we had something great.”

The Hurricanes (13–2) are set to face Indiana (15–0) at 7:30 p.m. ET Monday in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. It can be seen on ESPN and the ESPN app.
