For the first time in Erath football history, the Bobcats had a chance to do what no other Bobcat squad has done before.
Perfection.
Up against district foes Abbeville, they left nothing up to chance as they bulldozed the Wildcats for an unforgettable 40-12 victory on Friday, Nov. 7, wrapping up their first 10-0 start ever.
“It’s special, it’s something that’s never been done before and my mom almost cried last week and she’s over here crying now trying to make me cry,” Erath coach Eric LeBlanc said. “Im proud and I’m glad I was born and raised here in Erath because this is special, but we still got a lot of work to do.”
Bobcats come out swinging
Abbeville opened up the game a score on a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dazavien Maze to wide receiver Cameron Samuels. Taking that first punch made Erath determined to punch right back, as it only took its offense two plays to score its own touchdown.
The Bobcats pulled a trick play, using senior quarterback Jack Landry as a wide receiver catching a pass from Talen Landry for a 58-yard score. Landry showcased his arm in the next offensive drive, this time delivering the pass to Talen Landry for about a 70-yard touchdown.
“I think I surprised everybody with that play, I even surprised myself I didn’t know I could catch like that,” Jack Landry said on his receiving touchdown. “But that was a play drawn up by our coaching staff and they pull stuff like that every week and we trust them.”
After the Landry to Landry touchdown, Erath snagged all the momentum from the Wildcats and their home crowd.
Erath’s loaded rushing attack
Outside of the first quarter, the Bobcats’ offense didn’t turn to the pass game for the rest of the game. The remainder belonged to their three-headed running back corps of Jahlil Charles, Aiden Bourque and Landon Lemaire.
It didn’t matter which of the three took the snap, they were going to move the chains behind the big bodies in the trenches.
“We knew it was going to be a big running game this week so we were on our O-line all this week and they were ready for this game,” Charles said.
Charles ended the game with close to 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Bourque led the Bobcats in carries and had a rushing touchdown of his own from four yards out.
Lemaire broke out for a 30-yard rushing touchdown in the second half. He was also a key weapon on defense, snagging an interception in the second half.
With this win and history made, the Bobcats are only hungry for more.
“We still got a lot of work to do,” LeBlanc said. “We plan on being with this team for another five weeks this year so that the three words l left the team with ‘Jobs not done.’”
