Just a day after we learned that the Spartans are losing one kicker in Tarik Ahmetbasic to the transfer portal, Michigan State football has found his presumptive replacement, landing a commitment from 2026 kicker Stephen Gonzales.

Gonzales was rated as a 5-star kicker by Kohl's Performance Camps and the No. 4-ranked kicker in the 2026 class. He was All-State in the state of North Carolina, where he attended Union Academy.

Gonzales has a video on his X.com profile hitting a 57-yard kick in a game. He had offers out from Marshall, Sacramento State, and Stetson University.

Last season, Martin Connington was the starting kicker for the Spartans with Ahmetbasic as the reserve, so this will be a completely new look kicking unit for the Spartans, led by incoming special teams coordinator LeVar Woods. Liam Boyd, a transfer from Charlotte, will be the presumptive starting kicker this upcoming season, but now he will have some healthy competition from the highly rated freshman.
