Who is Carson Beck? What to know about Miami QB from Jacksonville

Miami quarterback Carson Beck is playing for a national championship in the College Football Playoff final on Monday, Jan. 19.

A Miami victory would boost Beck into the exclusive ranks of three-time national champions.

This quarterback from Jacksonville has already filled both the Sunshine State and the Peach State with highlights during his football career. Here's what fans need to know about Beck.

Carson Beck won Mr. Football at Mandarin

Beck, who began his high school career at Providence in part-time duty behind current Jacksonville Jaguars practice-squad quarterback Carter Bradley, transferred to Mandarin before his junior year in 2018 and helped spark one of the most unexpected turnarounds in Northeast Florida sports history.

With Beck behind center, Mandarin — which had gone 2-8 in 2017 and finished the 2018 regular season at 6-4 — stormed through the Florida High School Athletic Association playoffs to win the Class 8A state championship in 2018.

He threw for 329 yards and five touchdowns in the state final, a 37-35 victory over Miami Columbus.

Beck received the Times-Union's All-First Coast player of the year award and the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football award, passing for 3,546 yards and 39 touchdowns in the championship season.

Carson Beck signed with Georgia

Even before his Mr. Football season, Beck was already a hot prospect in the recruiting world.

Early in his high school career while still at Providence, he had committed to Florida for baseball. Then, after a sophomore season when he batted .354 with 22 RBI, he switched to Alabama with plans to compete in both football and baseball.

But in February 2019, he de-committed from the Crimson Tide and chose Georgia instead. He made it official and signed with the Bulldogs in the early signing period in December 2019.

At Georgia, Carson Beck won two national championships

Sanford Stadium was a successful destination for Beck.

He did not throw a pass in 2020, but saw part-time duty (four games in 2021, seven games in 2022) on Georgia's national championship squads in 2021 and 2022 as a backup behind Stetson Bennett IV.

Beck moved into the starter role for 2023. He passed for 3,941 yards and 24 touchdowns that year, and followed with 3,485 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2024 before a serious elbow injury halted his season.

In December 2024, Beck announced on Instagram that he planned to enter the NFL Draft, but he changed course two weeks later and decided to transfer to Miami instead for his extra year of eligibility stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

With Georgia, Beck passed for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns.

Carson Beck at Miami

Carson Beck #11 of the Miami Hurricanes warms up prior to the game against the Ole Miss Rebels during the 2025 College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl at State Farm Stadium on Jan. 8, 2026, in Glendale.

Since joining the Hurricanes, Beck has helped his new team advance further than most fans would have imagined before the kickoff.

He has completed 73.3 percent of his passes this year, a career high for a full season, connecting on 319 of 435 attempts thus far. Beck also has 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

But it was a less frequent rushing touchdown for Beck that officially propelled the Hurricanes past Ole Miss and into the College Football Playoff final.

With a victory, Beck would become a rare three-time national champion quarterback.

What are Carson Beck's NFL Draft prospects?

Analysts' views vary significantly on Beck's future in the 2026 NFL Draft. Scouts rate his arm strength favorably, but inconsistency and higher-than-ideal interception numbers during his college career have raised questions. Pro Football Focus has rated him No. 32 among college football quarterbacks this year.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. rates Beck fifth among quarterbacks in the draft, behind Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza of Indiana, Ty Simpson of Alabama, Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss and Drew Allar of Penn State.

Beck is most often cited as a second-day or third-day draft selection, which could change depending on the CFP final against Indiana and the twists and turns of the process leading up to the draft in Pittsburgh.
