Teams to reach national championship without winning conference

Conference championships are slowly becoming irrelevant in the College Football Playoff era.

In the past, winning the conference you played in was almost a prerequisite for playing for a national championship, with a few (very notable) exceptions. However, with the playoff field expanding from four teams to 12 teams last season, the prerequisite is no longer there.

In 2024 ― the first year of the expanded playoff field ― No. 8 seed Ohio State walked away with the national championship, despite not even playing in the Big Ten Conference Championship game. The Buckeyes‘ opponent in the title game, Notre Dame, doesn’t play in a conference at all.

When No. 1 Indiana takes the field in the CFP national championship on Monday, Jan. 19 from Hard Rock Stadium, it will go up against the latest team to reach the national championship game without winning its conference: Miami.

This would be familiar territory for the Hurricanes, as they won their first three national championships in 1983, 1987 and 1989 as an independent team. They then won the 1991 national title after finishing second in the Big East Conference, even with an undefeated, 12-0 record.

Here’s a look at other teams that have reached the national championship game without winning their conference, dating back to 2001:

2025 Miami

Miami football has been a member of the ACC since 2004 and has yet to win a conference championship. No matter for the Hurricanes, as they have a chance to win the 2025 national championship without even playing in the conference championship game (thanks to some curious tiebreakers).

The Hurricanes dropped a pair of regular-season games to Louisville by a combined nine points and, as a result of ACC tiebreakers, finished in a five-way tie for second in the ACC — and on the outside looking in of the conference championship game. Duke then beat Virginia to claim the conference title.

Perhaps that was a good thing for Miami, as a third loss to Virginia in the conference championship game would have eliminated them from the field. Playing one less game has its benefits this deep into the season.

2024 Ohio State

The 2024 national champions lost once to Oregon, but needed only to beat a struggling Michigan squad to end the regular season to reach the Big Ten Conference Championship game. However, the Wolverines pulled off an improbable upset win to deny the Buckeyes a spot in the Big Ten Championship game.

Just like Miami, playing one less game benefited the Buckeyes. Ohio State got some extra rest and then steamrolled its opponents during its playoff run. The Buckeyes defeated No. 9 Tennessee, No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Texas and No. 7 Notre Dame to win their first national title since 2014.

2024 Notre Dame

It’s hard to play in a conference championship game if you don’t play in a conference. That is the case for the Fighting Irish for both instances on this list. The 2024 version of the Fighting Irish made the playoff as the No. 7 seed with an 11-1 record. Their only loss, surprisingly, came against a Northern Illinois team that finished the season 8-5.

2022 TCU

TCU’s appearance in the 2022 CFP as a non-champion was the last of the four-team CFP era. It is also the last instance of a team losing its conference championship game and still qualifying for the CFP field.

The Horned Frogs finished the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record, including a 9-0 mark in Big 12 play. However, they were knocked off 31-28 in overtime by Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship game.

TCU coach Sonny Dykes argued that playing in the conference championship should not be held against the Horned Frogs. The committee eventually agreed, with TCU proving it belonged with a 51-45 win vs. Michigan in the semifinal. They then suffered what was at the time the biggest blowout in bowl game history to Georgia.

2021 Georgia

Kirby Smart is just 1-7 against Alabama during his coaching career. One of those losses came in the 2021 SEC Championship game, where the Crimson Tide cruised to a 41-24 victory over Georgia.

However, as Georgia had just one loss following the loss to Alabama, it fell only two spots, from No. 1 to No. 3 in the CFP bracket. The Bulldogs took down Michigan 34-11 in the semifinal and reached the championship game for a rematch against the Crimson Tide.

Smart and Georgia won the rematch over Alabama, 33-18, winning the first of back-to-back CFP championships, and the first for the program since 1980.

2017 Alabama

Alabama’s loss to Auburn in the 2017 Iron Bowl sent the Tigers to the SEC Championship Game, while the Crimson Tide was forced to watch from home, not knowing their CFP fate.

However, Alabama received help for its case when Georgia defeated No. 2 Auburn 28-7 in the SEC Championship while Ohio State defeated No. 4 Wisconsin 27-21 in the Big Ten Championship. With those two results, one-loss Alabama sneaked in as the No. 4 seed over the one-loss Badgers, two-loss Buckeyes and three-loss Tigers.

That marked the first time two teams from one program made the CFP field.

The Crimson Tide defeated No. 1 Clemson 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl semifinal to prove it belonged in the field, and then defeated Georgia 26-23 in overtime on the infamous connection between freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and freshman DeVonta Smith.

2012 Notre Dame

The 2012 Notre Dame team was the final one to not win a conference to qualify for the BCS Championship. That is, of course, because the Fighting Irish did not play in a conference in 2012, either, becoming the first independent team to play in the title game since the start of the BCS.

The Fighting Irish finished the 2012 regular season with a perfect 12-0 mark, which included wins over No. 10 Michigan State, No. 18 Michigan, No. 17 Stanford and No. 8 Oklahoma. However, the Crimson Tide proved to be superior to Notre Dame in a dominant 42-14 win to claim the second straight national championship for the program.

2011 Alabama

Alabama was dominant during the 2011 college football season, winning 11 regular-season games by at least 16 points, which included wins over No. 23 Penn State, No. 14 Arkansas, No. 12 Florida and No. 24 Auburn.

However, the Crimson Tide lost to No. 1 LSU 9-6 on Nov. 5 in overtime in a defense-dominant matchup. Alabama closed out the regular season with three straight wins, but did not play in the SEC Championship game, as LSU won the West Division to clinch a spot in the game.

In the final BCS ranking, Alabama (11-1) controversially finished No. 2 in the final BCS standings over third-ranked Big 12 champion Oklahoma State (11-1) and No. 4 Stanford (11-1) to earn a chance at redemption against No. 1 and undefeated LSU. The Crimson Tide dominated the Tigers, never allowing them to cross midfield in a 21-0 win for Alabama.

2003 Oklahoma

The 2004 BCS national championship game is the last recognized split championship for the NCAA, and the only one of the BCS era. The controversy started with the Sooners losing 35-7 to Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship game.

With its loss, Oklahoma, LSU and USC all finished with one loss for the season. The AP and Coaches Poll both had the Trojans ranked No. 1 and LSU No. 2, but the BCS computers put the Sooners No. 1, sending them to the national championship vs. the Tigers.

LSU defeated Oklahoma 21-14 in the BCS Championship, held that year at the Sugar Bowl, while USC defeated Michigan 28-14 in the Rose Bowl. The Trojans finished No. 1 in the final AP Poll, while the Tigers were No. 1 in the final Coaches Poll, resulting in the split championship.

2001 Nebraska

The end of the 2001 college football season was full of drama, leading Nebraska to earn a berth in the national championship despite not even playing in the Big 12 Championship game.

The chaos began with the Cornhuskers ― which had been undefeated and No. 2 for most of the season behind Miami ― losing to Colorado 62-36 on Nov. 23, 2001. The next day, Oklahoma lost 16-13 to rival Oklahoma State.

The following week, Florida lost to Tennessee 34–32 for its second loss of the season, while Texas lost 39-37 to Colorado. The Vols then lost to LSU in the SEC Championship game the following week, reopening the door for Nebraska to reach the championship game.

The Hurricanes then defeated Nebraska 37-14 in the Rose Bowl to win the national championship, finishing the season undefeated at 12-0.
