Former Chiefs QB Trent Green on Indiana football’s revival

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The College Football National Championship game is Monday night between Indiana and Miami.

The Indiana program historically has a win percentage under 500 — and before the season, only three bowl wins. Former Chiefs quarterback Trent Green was at the helm of one of those three, in 1991.

“We had some success, we went to three bowl games, had some winning records, did some really good things,” Green said.

“We would average over 50,000 fans. But this is back when the stadium had open ends”

Green’s Cooper Bowl win was the last Bowl Game Indiana won — until this season

“None of us can believe it, we’re all enjoying the ride. But, it’s been special,” he added.

The Hoosiers have two bowl wins this year.

“I mean, it’s been a pretty special run, but not, it’s not one that me as a former player or even my former teammates — we talked about it quite extensively — it’s pretty special what they’re doing,” Green said.

Led by a coach he admired, once he figured out who Curt Cignetti is.

“He wasn’t a guy that was on the radar, I, you know, didn’t know much about him. I looked up as much as I could on him. I reached out to Scott (Dolson Indiana athletic director) because I wanted to talk to him and welcome him to Indiana and the football program. He was excited, his press conference made a lot of headlines nationally,” he said.

“It’s simple, I win. Google me,” Cignetti said.

“Indiana isn’t spending the kind of money NIL wise, that other programs have. And the number one thing you have to do, you have to find the right guys. You had to find guys early on, you had to find guys with chips on the shoulder and had something to prove.”

So, as surprising as this season has been, Green’s NFL duties kept him busy. Last week though he got to enjoy the Indiana-Oregon Peach in person.

“There was big tailgate, we had over 30 of us. Guys I played with and guys I didn’t play with. But, just talking about how special this two year run has been,” he said.

Green says he’s headed to Miami for the National Championship game Monday Night — as the Hoosiers are favored to win the program’ first national title.
