Texas Tech football gets edge rusher Jamond Mathis from transfer portal

Jamond Mathis has been working his way up the college football ladder. He spent two years at Southern Illinois in the FCS, one year with Kent State in a Group of Five conference and now he’s headed to the Texas Tech football team in the Big 12.

Mathis, a second-team all-Mid-American Conference defensive end this season, committed to the Red Raiders out of the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, Jan. 19, according to On3 Sports. Only a week before, Mathis had pledged to Virginia. He’s listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds.

As a redshirt sophomore this season with Kent State, Mathis was credited with 28 tackles, including 8 tackles for loss with 6 sacks. He also had three pass breakups.

Mathis was credited with one tackle in the Golden Flashes’ 62-14 loss to Tech on Sept. 6 at Jones AT&T Stadium.

At St. Charles (Mo.) Duchesne High School, he had 23 career sacks and was an all-state linebacker in 2022. Mathis redshirted while playing four games for Southern Illinois in 2023, then had 30 tackles, 8 1/2 tackles for loss and 3 sacks as a part-time starter his redshirt freshman year.

He has two years of eligibility left.

What Kent State transfer edge defender Jamond Mathis brings to Texas Tech football

Central Michigan wide receiver Langston Lewis (20) is tackled by Kent State defensive lineman Jamond Mathis (4) during the first half of the game at Dix Stadium in Kent on November, 19, 2025.

Texas Tech continues to rebuild its gutted edge-defenders unit, which needs both starters and top backups. Mathis is the fourth addition to the group from the transfer portal, following Amarie Fleming from Division II Allen, Trey White from San Diego State and Adam Trick from Miami (Ohio).

Tech’s 12-2 Orange Bowl team is losing four edge defenders who completed their eligibility and another four transferring out.

Mathis will join the pool of newcomers trying to quickly adapt to the Red Raiders‘ system and provide immediate impact. Theirs is a tall order. Tech finished with 41 sacks, tied for sixth in the FBS, and 24 came from unanimous All-America honoree David Bailey and Romello Height, who was first-team all-Big 12 on the team selected by coaches.

Bailey and his backup, Charles Esters III, and Height and his backup, Terrell Tilmon, are out of eligibility.
