Syracuse vs Miami Prediction: Go Time For the Hurricanes

All Miami had to do was beat Syracuse, and it would be off to the ACC Championship, and almost certainly, into the College Football Playoff instead of Clemson.

Instead, Cam Ward and company lost 42-38. The Hurricanes went to the Pop-Tarts Bowl, lost after Ward tapped out at halftime after setting a touchdown pass record, and now they’re trying to get back into the CFP mix.

Here’s the best guess. If Miami wins out with NC State, at Virginia Tech, and at Pitt to close, it’ll be 10-2, and it’ll get into the CFP as the 10 seed over Notre Dame, and eventual American champion USF.

But it would help if it looked and played the part.

Syracuse has crashed since losing starting quarterback Steve Angeli to a leg injury. It lost five straight, but it gets the chance to play the spoiler again with the Canes this week, and a trip to Notre Dame to follow.

Is anything going right with the Orange right now?

The running game hasn’t been totally awful, and the turnover parade has slowed to a crawl, but the only way this works is to hit Miami with a slew of deep shots.

SMU bombed away last week, Louisville paired all the picks of Carson Beck with a slew of downfield throws, and the only other close call was against Notre Dame, and CJ Carr was great as the game went on. However …

Why Miami Will Win

Syracuse tried Joseph Filardi at quarterback against North Carolina. He connected on four of his 18 throws for 39 yards.

In those three tough games for Miami – the two losses and the thriller against the Irish – it allowed well over seven yards per pass. No one else has come all that close.

Since Angeli went down, the Orange have been able to connect on a few big plays here and there, but even when it works, it’s not enough.

And that’s not the real problem. The Syracuse defense is getting destroyed on the ground. No one is taking any chances – throw the safe passes, and keep running the ball over and over and over again.

Syracuse vs Miami Prediction, Betting Lines

Miami will dominate on both sides of the line, and this will get ugly fast.

Forget about any sort of a Syracuse running game – it’ll be happy to get close to 80 yards. This won’t be the game when the Orange get right.

On the other side, Beck will be very, very careful with the ball. He’ll get all the time in the world to work, and the ground game and defense will take care of the rest.
