The 2025 college football season came to a close on Monday night with the Indiana Hoosiers defeating the Miami Hurricanes 27-21 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Short of a handful of all-star games that are scheduled over the next month, the next time we’ll see college football games played will be on Saturday, August 29th in Week 0 of the 2026 season.

The Oklahoma Sooners had a successful season in 2025, making it back to the CFP for the first time since 2019. OU hopes to build on a strong season with an even better one in 2026. In the final US LBM Coaches Poll of the year, the Sooners finished 2025 at No. 10, while they were slotted at No. 13 in the final Associated Press Poll of the year.

Another one of the many “final rankings for 2025” that came out on Monday was from ESPN’s Bill Connelly. He released his final SP+ rankings of the season, with national champion Indiana atop the list. The Sooners landed at No. 14 in those rankings, behind such teams as Notre Dame, Utah, Vanderbilt, Iowa, and Washington that didn’t even make the playoff.

OU was the fifth-highest ranked SEC team, and one of nine to appear in the top 25. Oklahoma trailed Georgia (6th), Ole Miss (7th), Texas A&M (10th), and Vanderbilt (11th), but ranked ahead of Texas (17th), Tennessee (19th), Alabama (20th), and Missouri (21st).

After a disappointing year in 2024, Oklahoma’s wild ride of a 2025 season included early wins over Illinois State, Michigan, Temple, and Auburn before a bye week. A win over Kent State was followed up by a loss to Texas, but OU bounced back by beating South Carolina. Another loss to Ole Miss followed, but the Sooners once again bounced back by beating Tennessee before heading into another bye week. Three more wins over Alabama, Missouri, and LSU closed out the regular season, and Oklahoma made the playoff as a Round 1 host team, and the No. 8 seed.

However, in a rematch with Alabama in the first round of the CFP, the Crimson Tide bested the Sooners, ending OU’s run. Oklahoma’s 2026 season begins in Norman in Week 1 on Saturday, September 5th against the UTEP Miners.
