The biggest challenge for new Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham has been retention. And though everything appeared to be sunny before the transfer portal opened, there was something of an exodus of players once the portal was open for business.

Even so, Whittingham managed to lure many top Wolverines back from the brink, getting Jake Guarnera, Zeke Berry, Jordan Young, Andrew Sprague, and Enow Etta to withdraw from being available to other teams. And he isn't done, apparently.

It wasn't a surprise that former Michigan walk-on running back Bryson Kuzdzal had entered the transfer portal. After all, Jordan Marshall, when healthy, is the starter. And the Wolverines brought in Oklahoma tailback Taylor Tatum and have a five-star incoming freshman Savion Hiter. Kuzdzal appeared to be interested in Rutgers and Georgia, but nothing fully materialized, leading to a commitment.

One person told WolverinesWire, on the condition of anonymity, that Kuzdzal is set to withdraw from the transfer portal and return to Ann Arbor.

Kuzdzal was foisted into action with injuries to both Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall, and he ended up having 100 yards in his first career start, against Maryland. In 2025, he had 76 carries for 326 yards (4.29 yards per carry) and four touchdowns.

In addition to Marshall, Tatum, Hiter, and Kuzdzal, the Wolverines still have Micah Ka'apana, Donovan Johnson, and another incoming freshman in Jonathan Brown. Michigan lost freshman Jasper Parker to Arkansas via the transfer portal.
