The Indiana Hoosiers' unprecedented turnaround not only culminated in a national title but also an opportunity for a former Wisconsin tight end to shine on college football's brightest stage.
Former Badger veteran pass-catcher Riley Nowakowski, who transferred out of Luke Fickell's program on Dec. 18, 2024, tallied the Hoosiers' first offensive touchdown of the contest en route to their 27-21 win over the Miami Hurricanes for the organization's first title ever.
The moment arrived at the 6:13 minute-mark of the second quarter. Lined up at fullback, Nowakowski took a handoff from quarterback Fernando Mendoza at the one-yard line and powered into the end zone to cap off a 14-play scoring drive. The touchdown stretched IU's lead to 10-0, an edge to Hoosiers would hold on until intermission.

Nowakowski also logged two catches for 17 yards on the evening and served as one of five offensive weapons to snare a pass from Mendoza in the final contest of the season. Through three College Football Playoff games, the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native registered seven receptions for 71 yards. His sole score came in the title game, arguably the most impactful offensive moment of his collegiate career.
During his sole season as a Hoosier, Nowakowski finished with 32 catches for 387 yards and two scores through the air. He added two carries for a pair of rushing scores as well.
In five years at Wisconsin, Nowakowski reeled in 18 catches for 131 yards and one receiving score across 39 games. In just one season in Bloomington, Indiana, he nearly tripled his receiving yardage totals and added a national title to his resume.
