LSU football offers scholarship to son of program legend

LSU football extended a scholarship offer to BJ LaFell, the son of LSU legend Brandon LaFell, on Wednesday.

The younger LaFell is a part of the 2029 recruiting class, coming off an impressive do-it-all freshman campaign at Shadow Creek High School. According to MaxPreps, he attempted nine passes in the 2025 season, completing five for 72 yards. He also saw 10 carries, rushing for 151 yards and four touchdowns. Lastly, LaFell did a fair amount of work as a receiver, with four catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.

LSU isn’t the only SEC team racing to build a relationship with the young talent, as Ole Miss and Missouri have already extended him offers. It’s a surprise that the Tigers weren’t first in line, though, given the talent his father was during his time in Baton Rouge.

Although LSU football has long been known as “Wide Receiver University,” with names such as Malik Nabers, Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Odell Beckham Jr., and Jarvis Landry in recent history, LaFell was one of the school’s first elite receivers. He’s one of the most productive pass-catchers in program history, ranking fourth all-time in receptions (175), sixth in receiving yards (2,517), and second in receiving touchdowns (25).

After his four seasons as a Tiger, LaFell carved out a nine-year NFL career, recording 406 catches, 5,398 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns during his time as a pro.

LaFell’s impressive playing career certainly sets a high bar for his son, but Tiger fans should hope that BJ is up to the challenge of trying to exceed the expectations that come with his last name — and if so, that he plans to do so in Baton Rouge.
