College Football Playoff makes key expansion decision for 2026 season

College football fans are clamoring for more teams to enter the 2026 College Football Playoff after another successful postseason in 2025.
However, new reports are emerging that the CFP committee is content for now with its current 12-team playoff following Indiana’s historic national championship.

On3 has revealed that the 2026 College Football Playoff will likely keep its 12-team format despite rumors of the Big Ten and SEC wanting to add more teams. Recent reports have suggested that the SEC wants as many as 24 teams to create a larger bracket.

However, college football could have another interesting year in 2026 with fringe teams battling up until selection day for the final CFP announcement.
In 2025, Alabama, Miami and Notre Dame all battled for the final two places in the playoff, while BYU, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt also built strong cases for the postseason.

College football insider Josh Pate recently revealed his plan to save bowl season, however, it remains unclear if the NCAA and CFP committee will entertain any sort of schedule changes in the near future.
