Notre Dame’s 2026 football schedule might not be a killer, but that could quickly change if a few things break the right way.
As is, the Irish don’t play any FCS teams, play ten games against Power Four programs, and
The Good, the Bad, and Who Notre Dame Misses in 2026
The Good
Technically, the schedule isn’t all that bad. Yes, there are ten games against Power Four teams, but the first six games are against teams that didn’t go bowling last season, and there are seven overall.
It’s not a three-game schedule like last year – Miami, Texas A&M, USC were the only three true challenges – but, at BYU, Miami. That’s about it.
The Bad
There’s a chance the schedule becomes a whole lot more difficult if Wisconsin, Michigan State, North Carolina, Purdue, Stanford, and Syracuse are all better.
There are only four true road games, and one of them is down the road at Purdue. However, the Wisconsin showdown is in Green Bay and Navy in Foxborough.
What Teams Will Miss
Notre Dame has its Friends With Benefits deal with the ACC, and it’s always a big deal for conference teams that get the Irish on the slate. This year, Notre Dame misses Cal, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Pitt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
Notre Dame’s Best and Worst Case Scenarios in 2026
Best Case: The Irish beat BYU and Miami
As long as Notre Dame goes 11-1, it’s on the College Football Playoff – this year, if it’s in the final top 12, it’s automatically in. It’s probably okay if it goes 10-2 again, but it might need a little work. The Irish beat the Cougars and the Canes, and everything else should fall into place, but …
Worst Case: The Irish don’t beat BYU and Miami
The two losses last year came at the very beginning of the season. They were close, and the team cranked on the other ten games to get into range in the final College Football Playoff rankings.
This time around, if they lose at BYU in the middle of the campaign, and at home to Miami on November 14th, and forget it. The Irish won’t get the respect in the rankings this time around.

Games That Will Decide Notre Dame’s Season
1. at BYU, Oct. 17. This is the biggest of games. As long as the Irish don’t trip up badly everywhere else, win this, and it should all be okay with the College Football Playoff run.
2. Miami, Nov. 7. Win or lose at BYU, and even if there’s a blip somewhere else, this is so late in the season that a win over the Hurricanes – and a 10-2 record – should be enough.
3. Wisconsin (in Green Bay), Sept. 6. The Badgers should be far better, and they’re going to let it rip in the opener. If the Irish lose this, there will be little to no margin for error the rest of the way.
