Lane Kiffin bolstered the running back room for LSU football with an addition to the coaching staff. Fred McAfee will join LSU as the assistant running backs coach, according to a report from Matt Moscona on Saturday.
McAfee was a running back for the Rebels under Kiffin from 2021 to 2023. He saw time on special teams but didn't record an appearance on offense before entering the transfer portal in 2024.
McAfee will work under LSU running back coach and assistant head coach Kevin Smith, who followed Kiffin to Baton Rouge shortly after the former took the helm. McAfee's father, former New Orleans Saints running back Fred McAfee, serves as the team's vice president of player engagement.

LSU retained its top two ball carriers from last season in Harlem Berry and Caden Durham. Kiffin's staff also added four running backs out of the transfer portal, three of whom came from power conference schools. The Tigers didn't sign a running back in the 2026 high school recruiting class.
