At a time when nothing seems out of the question in college athletics, football coaches can find themselves providing answers for what’s happening on the hardwood, as evidenced by Auburn football‘s Alex Golesh.
The first-year SEC head coach was asked about his new employer’s biggest rival Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Senior Bowl, specifically the ongoing eligibility case of Alabama basketball‘s Charles Bediako.
If a player of Golesh’s declared for the NFL draft but never reached the professional ranks, would he entertain bringing him back to the program?
“Would you believe me if I said I haven’t paid much attention to it?” Golesh said. (It’s) crazy. Would add a bigger pool of players, wouldn’t it? I don’t know. I really don’t. It would certainly add a bigger pool of kids.”
Bediako, who forfeited his remaining college eligibility and declared for the NBA draft in 2023, was granted a temporary restraining order by a Tuscaloosa judge last week, allowing him to return to and play for the Crimson Tide, despite embarking on a professional playing career. Bediako has since appeared in two games for Alabama, averaging 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
While Golesh didn’t know whether or not he’d actually entertain a similar move, he didn’t speak with opposition to the situation.
“Every single time there’s a situation like that, my antennas go up,” Golesh said. “I think, with every change or every ruling or lack of ruling, you’ve got an opportunity to either sit and complain about it, which I think we tend to as coaches. I’ve always looked at it the other way.
“It’s, where’s the loophole in here? Who’s available out there that we can go get that fits what we do? It’s certainly fascinating. From the legal side, fascinating.”
