Merv Teague, a star at Columbus East before becoming a starting offensive lineman at Ohio State in the early 1970s, has died. He was 76.
His cousin, Jabari Teague, said he died on Jan. 23.
Teague started at left tackle in 1972 and 1971, helping the Buckeyes to reach the Rose Bowl during his senior year while often opposite All-American right tackle John Hicks. It was the first of the Buckeyes’ four straight appearances in the New Year’ Day bowl game early in the decade.
A shoulder injury cut short Teague’s junior year, requiring surgery and sidelining him for the final six games in 1971.
Teague was on the other side of the ball as a sophomore in 1970 when he made three tackles as a defensive end. He was also a tight end on the Buckeyes’ freshman team in 1969 before freshmen were eligible to play on varsity.
Teague was from Youngstown before moving to Columbus and attending East. He was an All-Ohio tackle and linebacker for the Tigers before enrolling at Ohio State.
