SOUTH BEND — Former Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields stayed active early on a chilly Saturday afternoon at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Paired up on the American team with former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, Fields hauled in a pair of short passes totaling 20 yards plus another unofficial reception for a 2-point conversion. All three grabs came on the first three offensive series for the American squad.
Those were the only targets of the day for the Virginia graduate transfer. Measured at 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds, Fields also had a chance to show off his blocking chops as the American team claimed a 17-9 win at Mitchell Field.
Former Irish safety Jalen Stroman, a Virginia Tech transfer, flipped over to the National side and saw plenty of action as well.
The temperature at kickoff was 34 degrees with 18 mph winds and gusts up to 40 mph.
Unlike the Shrine Bowl in Frisco, Texas on Jan. 27, the teams performed just two dynamic kickoffs, one to open each half. That limited opportunities to show off special-teams ability, something Stroman did across 102 snaps with the Irish in 2025.
The next stop on the pre-draft circuit is the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium, Feb. 26 to March 1. This year’s NFL Draft is set for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh.
NFL Network draft expert Daniel Jeremiah ranks Fields at No. 45 among draft-eligible players, two spots behind former Notre Dame running back Jadarian Price. Jeremiyah Love sits at No. 2 on Jeremiah’s list, which functions differently than a mock draft.
During Saturday’s broadcast, Jeremiah dubbed Fields the Senior Bowl’s “best wide receiver the entire week of practice.” Known for his ability to making leaping catches in traffic, Fields had a chance to show off his “big-time catch radius,” Jeremiah said, for NFL scouts and personnel departments.
