Florida State Dealt Unfortunate Recruiting Update After Gus Malzahn News

Florida State will have a new offensive coordinator for the 2026 college football season after Gus Malzahn retired from coaching on Monday.

Malzahn called the plays for the Seminoles during the 2025 season before retiring. Co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. was promoted to offensive coordinator by head coach Mike Norvell following the news.

After Malzahn announced his retirement, 2028 wide receiver Lamar Garrison announced that he was de-committing from the Seminoles. He had been committed to them since August before reopening his recruitment.

Garrison is the No. 40 wide receiver recruit in the country and the No. 221 overall recruit in his class, per Rivals. He’s listed as a three-star recruit.

The Seminoles had another tough season in 2025, finishing 5-7. Head coach Mike Norvell has been under a lot of heat since the Seminoles have only won seven games over the last two seasons, but he’ll have another chance to get them back on track in 2026.

Norvell has been the head coach for six seasons, compiling a 38-34 overall record. His best season came in 2023 when he led the Seminoles to the ACC title and a 13-1 overall record. They fell just short of making the College Football Playoff that season.

The Seminoles will open their 2026 college football campaign against the New Mexico State Aggies on Aug. 29. It will be a chance for them to start the season on a high note since they will host the SMU Mustangs the following week.
