LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin has never been shy when it comes to voicing his opinions on the state of college football. A common target of Kiffin's criticisms is the calendar.

Kiffin isn't the only one who takes issue with the yearly structure of the sport. Several coaches have complained about the postseason, the coach hiring season, recruiting, and the transfer portal, all culminating in December.

On Tuesday, Kiffin took to social media to question the date of the 2026-27 national championship game, which won't be played until Jan. 25, 2027. That's nearly a week later than the date of the 2025-26 title game.

"Somehow the calendar got even worse on purpose…. Kids play until Jan 25th and have almost a month between the games?!?!" Kiffin wrote on X.

Kiffin was quoting a post that points out the long gap between the College Football Playoff's quarterfinal round and the national championship game.

There will be a semifinal between the quarterfinals and the title, so it isn't exactly an entire month as Kiffin claims, but the late national title game is unique and still leaves a significant gap between the semifinals and the final game.

By the time the season is over, most schools will have already begun their spring semester. That could make it tough for the involved teams to navigate the transfer portal.
