The Alabama Crimson Tide used a smothering defensive effort to bottle up the LSU Tigers en route to their eighth straight win on Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama (8-1 overall, 6-0 conference) remained unbeaten in the SEC after holding LSU (5-4, 2-4) to 232 yards in a 20-9 victory that was a struggle for all four quarters, as Alabama-LSU games tend to be.
The Crimson Tide forced two turnovers, including one on the Tigers’ final possession when linebacker Yhonzae Pierre stripped Michael Van Buren of the ball with 3:03 left.
It was a fitting bookend after Nikhai Hill-Green caused tight end Bauer Sharp to fumble on a play that would have resulted in an LSU first down on the Tigers’ second offensive series of the game. Instead, Alabama turned a short field into its first points of the game when Conor Talty made the first of two big field goals.
Quarterback Ty Simpson had a few misfires, especially on deep routes, and turned the ball over once on a strip by Harold Perkins Jr. Simpson was 21 of 35 for 277 yards. He fired a pass on the money to Ryan Williams in the end-zone for a 17-3 lead just before halftime.
Alabama finished the night with 344 yards of total offense and 17 first downs. The Crimson Tide committed just two penalties for 25 yards, while LSU was its own worst enemy with 10 penalties for 75 yards.
Coach Kalen DeBoer’s team will learn its updated ranking in the next College Football Playoff rankings release Tuesday night (6 p.m. CT, ESPN).
In the meantime, here’s where Alabama sits in this week’s Coaches Poll after a Week 11 schedule that saw three top 10 teams — the Tide, Indiana Hoosiers and Oregon Ducks — struggle to get a win Saturday.
