Scott Klees retires after over two decades leading Wakulla football

After more than two decades on the Wakulla High School sidelines, legendary head football coach Scott “Barry” Klees is stepping away from the program that helped define his career.

Klees, whose retirement was first reported by WCTV, exits on a storybook note after leading the War Eagles to a district championship with his son, Owen, at quarterback. He will be inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) Hall of Fame on Jan. 10.

During his 24-year tenure at Wakulla, Klees compiled a 178–55 record, guided the War Eagles to two state championship appearances and helped more than 100 players advance to the college and NFL levels. Some of the notable players include Nigel Bradham, Feleipe Franks, and Jordan Franks. Before Wakulla, he spent his first seven years at Munroe.

Klees reflected on his 31-year coaching career, defining it as phenomenal because of the relationships he has made.

“For you to be successful as we have been, you have to have everybody on board, everybody heading in the same direction,” Klees told the Tallahassee Democrat. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have the best administration, the best assistant coaches and good football players to be able to compete and be successful. “

Though his coaching days are over, Klees will remain at Wakulla High School as a teacher and will dedicate his time to his family.
