No matter what the Texas Tech football team does in 2026, it’s safe to say the most famous person playing at Jones AT&T Stadium this coming year will be country recording artist George Strait.
The Red Raiders will even yield to him during spring football practice, playing their annual spring game on April 17, a Friday night instead of the usual Saturday. Strait is booked in Jones AT&T Stadium for two shows on April 24 and April 25.
“We’ll have a spring game on Friday night,” Tech coach Joey McGuire said, “because the king of country is coming that next week. I am a country fan, so we figured we’d get off the field faster to let them start getting set up for the concert, so we’re going to have a Friday night lights spring game.”
Texas Tech will have its first two spring practices on March 10 and March 12, a Tech athletics spokesman said, before the university’s spring break that’s scheduled from March 14-22. After returning, the remaining practice dates that month are March 24, 26, 28 and 31. The next workout is April 2, and the first intrasquad scrimmage is April 4.
The following week, the Red Raiders will practice on April 7, 9 and 11. The week after that, they’ll practice on April 14 and 16 before the spring game on April 17.
The Red Raiders won 12 games and the Big 12 championship last season and advanced to the College Football Playoff with a trip to the Orange Bowl. All were firsts for the program.
