Michigan State football made a change at quarterback last time out, but it's unclear if they'll stick with that move or not, according to head coach Jonathan Smith.

The Spartans inserted Alessio Milivojevic into the lineup as the new starting quarterback over Aidan Chiles in their last game at Minnesota two weeks ago. The move seemed to work in the Spartans' favor as Milivojevic threw for more than 300 yards and one touchdown in the narrow overtime loss at Minnesota. However, it doesn't sound like Milivojevic is the locked-in starter for this week's game against Penn State.

Smith was asked about the quarterback situation during his weekly press conference on Monday, and he stated that it's a "battle" that they are going to let "play out this week." Additionally, Smith didn't rule out the possibility of both Milivojevic and Chiles playing this week against the Nittany Lions.

Emmett Matasovsky of Spartan Shadows posted on social media about both comments from Smith during the press conference — which can be seen below:

Smith's comments could simply be a tactic to make Penn State prepare for both Spartans quarterbacks. Or it could be that the coaching staff didn't feel as strongly about Milivojevic's performance against the Golden Gophers as many of the fans did following the game. Either way, the quarterback situation is interesting and something we will need to monitor throughout this week.

Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. This matchup between Michigan State and Penn State will be televised on CBS.
