Doug Meacham 'gonna talk to' Hauss Hejny about possible Oklahoma State football return

STILLWATER — A couple weeks ago, Doug Meacham foreshadowed a “hard discussion” that would be had with Hauss Hejny regarding the injured quarterback’s potential return to the Oklahoma State football lineup.

But as of Monday when Meacham spoke to the media, that conversation had not yet happened.

“I’m gonna talk to him,” Meacham said when asked about Hejny’s status ahead of Saturday’s 11 a.m. game against Kansas State. “I’m not sure. So anything I tell you at this point, it won’t be accurate, because I don’t know for sure.

“But we’re gonna soon have a conversation to see where he is. I know last week, the Tuesday and Wednesday practices, he was jogging and throwing some balls and moving around a little bit. So we’ll see.”

Oklahoma State quarterback Hauss Hejny (8) warms up before an NCAA football game between Oklahoma State (OSU) and UT Martin in Stillwater, Okla., on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025.

Hejny was injured in the first quarter of the first game of the season and hasn’t played since. He faces a difficult decision because if he plays another snap this season, he becomes ineligible to apply for a medical hardship.

If granted a hardship, Hejny would be classified as a redshirt freshman again next year, with four years of eligibility remaining.

So even if he’s healthy enough to return at some point this season, it might not be in his best interest.

That said, Hejny has remained close with the team, even traveling to Kansas for the last game. He was on the sideline in his jersey and played catch with teammates during pregame.

“It says a lot, because in this day, and age of maybe some of the youngsters these days, they prefer to stay down here and go to (The) Strip and hang out, whereas he wants to be with the team,” Meacham said of Hejny’s willingness to travel with the team.

“And it says a lot about him as a person, how much it means to him and that he’s not going to waste any opportunity he can get to try to help us. So, it kind of makes you feel good to know there’s still guys out there like that, that care about the school and they feel there’s gratitude for where they are.”

Justin Blackmon goes into Ring of Honor this week

When he arrived at OSU last winter, receiver Shamar Rigby hadn’t heard the name Justin Blackmon.

But upon his research when he got here, he’s been wildly impressed to learn about the former Cowboy star who will be inducted into the Ring of Honor during Saturday’s game.

“He was a baller,” Rigby said. “I looked him up, I was watching highlights and stuff, like how many catches and yards he had. He was nice, for sure.”

College football’s only two-time Biletnikoff Award winner, Blackmon went into the College football Hall of Fame last year.

He will become the sixth Ring of honor inductee and the first receiver. He joins OSU’s four legendary running backs, Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Terry Miller and Bob Fenimore, as well as defensive lineman Leslie O’Neal.

Kick time set for UCF game

The Cowboys have one final road trip remaining and it will be an afternoon kickoff.

OSU travels to Orlando to take on UCF at 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Acrisure Bounce House.

The Cowboys will conclude the season at home against Iowa State on Nov. 29, but the kickoff time has not yet been announced.
