The Oklahoma Sooners are dealing with a pair of key injuries on the defensive side of the football. Star pass rusher R Mason Thomas missed three and a half quarters of the win over Tennessee, and linebacker Kobie McKinzie missed the entire game.
Both players are dealing with lower-body injuries. Ahead of this week’s road trip to Tuscaloosa, here’s what Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables had to say about the Sooners’ defensive stars when asked about their recovery.
“I haven’t seen them on the field since last Thursday, so I’ll see them here later on today,” Venables said. “We’ll see where they’re at.”
In what shape Venables saw them on the field last Thursday is anyone’s guess.
McKinzie was listed on the injury report heading into the Tennessee game and was downgraded as the week went along. Thomas was injured on the Volunteers’ second offensive drive when he rumbled 71 yards for a touchdown after Owen Heinecke knocked the ball loose from Joey Aguilar on a sack.
Their availability will likely be in question all week, and if they miss Oklahoma’s game against Alabama, it would certainly be a loss for the Sooners’ defense.
