Brennan Marion named one of most fascinating hires in college football

Colorado‘s coaching staff has been in the news far more frequently than any other Power Four coaching staff because of the instability heading into the 2026 season.

Heading toward the season, there’s no doubt the questions surrounding Deion Sanders’ staff will continue to swirl. Will Chris Marve be able to continue what Robert Livingston was building? Can Sanders find someone to replace the presence of Warren Sapp? But maybe most importantly of all, can new offensive Coordinator Brennan Marion unlock Julian Lewis and the Buffs’ offense?

It’s a question that all levels of media are asking, including The Athletic, which named Marion’s hiring among the top 25 most fascinating assistant coach hires in the nation. College football writer for the publication, Chris Vannini, puts him among the ranks of Bobby Petrino and Arthur Smith in the Power Four hires in high-profile spots category, and asks the question on every Buffs fan’s mind.

Can Marion’s Go-Go offense hold up in the Big 12 Conference?

Marion engineered the Go-Go offense, known for using two running backs on the same side of a shotgun formation, while he was a coach at Howard. Since then, he has taken it everywhere he’s been a playcaller, most recently at Sacramento State as head coach, where he led the Hornets to a 7-5 record and one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, averaging 34 points per game.

Notably, Marion helped UNLV rise from the basement in the Mountain West Conference to a College Football Playoff contender before his time with the Hornets. In his last season with UNLV, the Rebels averaged 35 points per game and over 243 rushing yards per game.

Marion has already been a key part of building Colorado’s new-look offense in the transfer portal. With his help, the Buffs landed two of his top running backs and an incredibly speedy wideout from Sacramento State. Colorado’s top recruit in the portal, Texas wideout DeAndre Moore Jr., also has ties to Marion, who coached the Longhorns’ receiving room in 2022.

In Austin, Marion picked up his signature cowboy hat, which you’ll see him frequently wearing on the sidelines. Whether Marion’s offense can hold up against higher-level competition remains to be seen, but he is certainly one of the most intriguing hires in the nation.
