When LSU football interim head coach Frank Wilson addressed the media on Monday, one question was at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Who is LSU’s starting quarterback?

Garrett Nussmeier was benched in the third quarter of LSU’s loss at Alabama. Sophomore transfer Michael Van Buren entered the game in place of Nussmeier, going 5/11 for 52 yards.

“I thought both of them did some good things. I thought both of those guys did things that need to be improved upon,” Wilson said.

Nussmeier and the entire LSU offense have struggled for much of 2025. Entering the Alabama game, there was talk of LSU’s willingness to make a change if Nussmeier’s up-and-down play continued.

“I thought Garrett at times was spectacular. He started off red hot. He did some really good things for us. I felt at the back end we needed a spark and something to get us going and add another dimension to our game,” Wilson said.

Wilson said Van Buren offered something different than Nussmeier. Van Buren’s legs gave LSU mobility at the QB position — something the Tigers haven’t had this year.

Going forward, Wilson says LSU will play both quarterbacks, but Nussmeier will be the first one to get the nod.

“I thought Garrett did well enough at times to still be in position to be the starter as we start and embark upon this weekend. So when we go to corrections today and practice tomorrow, he’ll be the first guy that goes in,” Wilson said.

But Wilson said he doesn’t see a clear separation where one is better than the other. They offer different skillsets, both of which are of use to LSU’s offense.

Next up for LSU is a home meeting with Arkansas in Week 12. The Razorbacks have one of the best offenses in the SEC and if this becomes a shootout, LSU will need solid play from the quarterback position, whether it’s Nussmeier or Van Buren.
