The Miami Hurricanes’ coaching staff for 2026 is nearly complete.

Miami is set to hire Army assistant coach Mike Viti as its new tight ends coach, a UM source told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. ESPN was first to report the news first.

The Hurricanes still need to replace defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge, who left UM to become the Arizona Cardinals’ cornerbacks coach.

Viti is an associate head coach and offensive line coach for the Black Knights. He has been on the Army staff for 10 years. In 2024, Viti coached the Army offensive line as it won the Joe Moore Award, which is given to the nation’s top offensive line. Army led the nation in rushing yards per game that season. He was also named Football Scoop’s co-offensive line coach of the year that season.

Before coaching the offensive line, Viti coached Army’s running backs from 2016-2021. Often utilizing an option offense, Army was one of the nation’s top five rushing offenses in each season Viti coached the team’s running backs.

Viti played fullback at Army and later served in the Army in Afghanistan, earning a Bronze Star and a Combat Action Badge.

Viti replaces Cody Woodiel, who left Miami’s staff to become Ole Miss’ co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. Woodiel was UM’s tight ends coach for three seasons.

The Hurricanes’ new tight ends coach takes over a talented room. Returning junior Elija Lofton had 23 catches for 218 yards and three touchdowns, but UM coaches have raved about his ability. Miami also returns second-year tight end Luka Gilbert, who was a four-star prospect, and a pair of four-star freshmen, Israel Briggs and Gavin Mueller.
