Entering Texas A&M coach Mike Elko’s third season at the helm, several questions regarding the revamped 2026 roster, now featuring 17 new additions from the transfer portal, will only be answered once the season begins, but the spring season, which begins in just 16 days, should provide more clarity on both sides of the ball.
However, after it was announced that quarterback Marcel Reed had re-signed with the program, the redshirt junior’s first full starting season may have ended on a low note after losing to Texas to end the 2025 regular season, and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff, but after passing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, the Tennessee native have proven his ability to lead the Aggie offense.
Still, Reed’s 12 interceptions and struggles against more complex defensive schemes directly led to both losses after the team started 11-0. Early last month, Mike Elko challenged his starting quarterback not just to improve his mechanics this offseason, but to reach a level of “consistency” in the pocket, combined with more urgency in pressure situations.
“Last offseason, it was about finishing and making sure that we finished the right way. This year, it’s more about consistency and urgency. … That applies to Marcel. There were times where he played quarterback at an elite level, and there were times where he didn’t.”
When grading Marcel Reed’s overall performance, Elko is right to state that he played at an elite level in all but a handful of games, especially during the second-half comeback win over South Carolina, hitting several tight-window passes and utilizing his legs to keep the offense on the field.
Nationally, Reed is not considered the best quarterback in the SEC, with Arch Manning (Texas), Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), and several veteran newcomers entering the conference, and currently sits at No. 7 in CBS Sports writer Cody Nagel’s preseason SEC QB rankings before every spring camp kicks off later this month.
“Reed’s first full season as the Texas A&M starter was a tale of two schedules. Against five Power Four opponents that finished with winning records — including Notre Dame — he accounted for just eight offensive touchdowns with eight turnovers, posting a modest 0.15 EPA per play, per TruMedia. In the final two games, both losses, he had four turnovers and no touchdowns. Against everyone else, Reed looked like a breakout star: 23 total touchdowns, only five giveaways and a 0.32 EPA per play. With a tougher slate looming in 2026, the question is which version Texas A&M will get when it matters most.”
Nagel hit the nail on the head regarding Reed’s poor performance against teams with winning records, and compared to quarterbacks, including Trinidad Chambliss, who took over games late in the year, while leading the Rebels to two wins in the College Football Playoff, Reed must become a plus-players against playoff-worthy opponents for the Aggies to have a shot at returning to the postseason.
Texas A&M’s spring football season will begin on March 20 and end on April 18 after the annual Maroon & White Spring Game.
