Notre Dame head coach and legend Lou Holtz passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89 after he entered hospice care in January.
Best known for his tenure at Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996, Holtz led the Fighting Irish to the 1988 national championship, a 12-0 season that cemented his status as a program icon. In 2008, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, formally enshrining a legacy that stretched far beyond the sideline.
