Brian Kelly says he would consider return to college coaching if the right opportunity comes along. The longtime coach says he has not closed the door on a return to college football, even after being fired by LSU during last season.
Kelly told SiriusXM’s “Dusty and Danny in the Morning” on Friday that he remains open to coaching again if the right situation presents itself. For now, he plans to stay connected to the game while evaluating the evolving landscape of college football.
“I don’t know that I’ve made the decision that I want to get back in,” Kelly said. “But while you wait, you need to work. I need to stay in the game.”
Kelly said he plans to spend the coming weeks visiting programs during spring practice to observe football operations and better understand the sport’s rapidly changing environment, including roster management, NIL and the transfer portal.
“I’m going to get out and see spring ball, see how programs are operating,” Kelly said. “I want to get around and learn some things and see where I can grow and be better.”
Kelly spent 12 seasons as head coach at Notre Dame Fighting Irish football from 2010-21, compiling a 113-40 record and leading the Irish to five consecutive 10-win seasons late in his tenure. His 2012 team reached the BCS national championship game.
After leaving Notre Dame in 2021, Kelly took over at LSU following the departure of Ed Orgeron. He won 10 games in each of his first two seasons with the Tigers, but failed to reach the College Football Playoff. One of the only negatives from his tenure.

After a 5-3 start in 2025, LSU dismissed Kelly despite a buyout exceeding $50 million.
Whether Kelly returns to the sideline remains uncertain, but he made clear the possibility remains. “If the right situation comes along,” Kelly said, “I’m certainly going to entertain it.”
