Oklahoma Facing Competition with 4-Star CB Darius Johnson Predicted to Choose Michigan

It was a bounce-back year for the Oklahoma Sooners in their second season in the SEC. After going 6-7 in 2024, Brent Venables led the Sooners to a 10-3 record and College Football Playoff appearance. While they fell short of a national championship with a first-round loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, it gave Oklahoma something to build on.

Of course, as for every college football team, high school recruiting is a top priority every offseason. Venables and his staff are off to a great start with the 2027 cycle. With 14 commitments, they rank third in the nation and second in the SEC. There are still plenty of players to pursue.

Cornerback Darius Johnson has been a longtime target for Oklahoma. Last season for Murrieta Valley High School, he had 29 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, and 10 pass deflections.

Johnson is listed as a four-star recruit, the No. 26 cornerback and No. 251 player in the nation, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. Along with already taking one visit to Norman, he is the younger brother of Derrick Johnson, a class of 2026 cornerback committed to the Sooners.

His family ties and interests in the program have made Oklahoma a strong contender in his recruitment. In fact, the Sooners have the highest chance (60.3%) to land the cornerback, per the Rivals recruiting prediction machine.

However, in an article from Rivals’ Adam Gorney, Johnson is predicted to choose the Michigan Wolverines. It would be a major blow for Oklahoma, which is looking for more talent, a cornerback to go alongside four-star Mikhail McCreary and three-star Mikyal Davis.

Meanwhile, Michigan would be adding to a 2027 cycle, which is slowly coming together with three total commitments, ranking fifth in the Big Ten and 20th in the nation.
