Jon Sumrall has wasted little time making his intentions clear during his first spring in Gainesville. His attention is fully locked on rebuilding the Florida Gators

The 43-year-old coach arrived in The Swamp after compiling a 43-12 record across successful stops at Troy and Tulane. Now, his mission is restoring the Gators to being an SEC contender and enter the national championship conversation. A place the program hasn't been in the modern playoff era.

Florida hired Sumrall to replace Billy Napier following a stretch of difficult seasons that saw the once-dominant program fall short of its traditional expectations. The university backed the hire with a six-year contract worth $44.7 million and committed more than $16 million toward an expanded support staff to help accelerate the rebuild.

During the opening week of spring practices, Sumrall has been a constant presence on the practice field, moving quickly between position groups, clapping encouragement and offering instruction.

Sometimes his tone is upbeat. Other times it’s direct and demanding, which is a reflection of the urgency surrounding the program’s reset.

Sumrall’s dedication has extended beyond the football complex. He told reporters on Tuesday, he and his wife, Ginny, had planned a spring break trip to Italy to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary and her birthday. Those plans were scrapped once Sumrall accepted the Florida job.

“I got too much s— to do,” Sumrall said.

The remark is proof of the intensity he has brought to Gainesville. With spring practice underway, Sumrall’s message to players is that every detail matters as Florida begins its climb back toward national relevance.
