Alabama football QB Ty Simpson exchanging intel on SEC defenses with Texas QB Arch Manning

Alabama football QB Ty Simpson and Texas QB Arch Manning have grown a friendship since first meeting at the Manning Passing Academy over the summer. And while keeping in regular contact, they’ve shared a few thoughts about SEC defenses they’ve faced this season.
Simpson, for instance, has asked Manning for some insight into an outstanding Oklahoma defense that he’ll face on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Texas has already knocked off OU, in the Red River Rivalry, and given that the Sooners have the SEC’s top-ranked defense, the Crimson Tide QB will gladly take any edge he can get.
But that comes with recipracality.
Manning is bending Simpson’s ear about the Georgia Bulldogs, who will play host to Texas on Saturday. Manning let it be known earlier this week that the two have been exchanging notes.
“Arch has got a loud mouth, huh? No, that’s my guy. We talk weekly, not just about ball, but about how each other is doing,” Simpson said. “He’s a really good friend of mine. I know he played somebody and we’d talked before, then of course, (Manning played in) the Red River Rivalry (against Oklahoma), and it was a good game, so I asked him a couple questions, and he asked me a couple questions about Vanderbilt and Georgia, right? Quarterback etiquette, talking to one another, just hey what did you see, what did you do here. Just about plays and fronts in general, right? Stuff we talk about, not just as friends but as quarterbacks as well.”
Alabama remains the only team that’s beaten Georgia this season with a 24-21 victory in Athens on Sept. 24. Texas faces Georgia on Saturday in a critical SEC matchup in which the loser will be all but eliminated from SEC Championship Game contention. The Longhorns knocked off OU 23-6 in October in one of Manning’s better performances of the season.
Alabama and Texas could potentially meet in the SEC title game, a scenario that would no doubt bring a quick end to the quarterbacks’ intel exchange. But for now, they’re glad to take what ever edge they can get.
