A year ago, following the Oregon Ducks’ annual Spring Game, we wrote here at Ducks Wire about redshirt freshman wide receiver Dillon Gresham, one of the biggest winners of the day after his breakout performance of three catches for 96 yards and a touchdown.

“With a chance to make a first impression on the coaching staff and fanbase in his first live-action with the team, the young receiver did not disappoint,” Ducks Wire wrote. “His day was highlighted by a 56-yard catch and run touchdown, but that may not have even been his best play. There was a moment earlier in the contest where Gresham laid out and made a spectacular catch on a go-ball that gave the stadium and commentators a jolt of energy.”

Now, less than 11 months removed from that showing, the future is uncertain for Gresham, a former 4-star recruit out of San Jacinto, California.

With a lot of hype going into the 2025 season, Gresham was forced to sit on the sideline with a neck injury, sporting a neck brace throughout the Ducks’ run to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Now, as Oregon kicks off the spring season, Gresham is still trying to work his way back to the field and realize his potential with the Ducks, but there doesn’t appear to be a clear roadmap, according to head coach Dan Lanning.

“It’s tough, and right now it’s still a little bit uncertain on his future,” Lanning said on Thursday, following the Ducks’ first practice. “But he’s attacked it with the right mindset. Football at some point ends for everybody, and sometimes you hope it doesn’t end for a guy like Dillon as soon as it did last season. We’ll see what it continues to look like moving forward; that’s the everyday battle, and it’s a wake-up call for anybody playing ball. It can be taken away from you in a second.”

While Oregon has no shortage of talent at the wide receiver position, potentially losing a guy like Gresham for this upcoming season, and maybe longer, would be a tough blow, not only for the team but for those around him. We will continue to monitor the injury over the next several weeks and months, hoping that Gresham can ultimately return to the field in Eugene and continue his career with the Ducks.
