The Texas Tech Red Raiders have one of the top classes in the 2027 recruiting cycle, and head coach Joey McGuire is looking to add on. They have already landed three defensive linemen, and they are now surging for Jhadyn Nelson, a four-star linebacker from Houston, Texas.
Nelson has never visited Texas Tech, but they were the first school to issue him a scholarship offer on Jan. 30. That has caused On3's Sam Spiegelman to name them the leader in his recruitment, projecting him to join their recruiting class. It is the only prediction about where he will go, giving the Red Raiders a 84.7% chance to land him in the Rivals recruiting prediction machine.
While Texas Tech is the favorite, they will have plenty of competetion for him. He has over 20 scholarship offers and has official visits scheduled with the Texas Longhorns, SMU Mustangs, Kansas State Wildcats, Ohio State Buckeyes, TCU Horned Frogs, and Houston Cougars. He will officially visit Texas Tech on June 10.
Nelson is ranked as the No. 181 overall player and No. 16 linebacker in the Rivals industry ranking. He is also the No. 26 player from Texas.
He had a breakout junior season at Langham Creek. In 10 games, he recorded 71 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one pick-six, and three forced fumbles.
The Red Raiders are recruiting Texas extensively, and Nelson would be another major in-state addition. Of their five commitments, four are from Texas, with three ranking among the state's top 10 prospects.
