After debuting at #7 in the last week’s inaugural College Football Playoff rankings, BYU slipped to #12 after the loss to Texas Tech Saturday. The Red Raiders jumped from #8 to #6. BYU is one spot ahead of 7-2 Utah, who is #13. BYU also fell behind two loss teams Texas and Oklahoma, who are ranked #10 and #11.
BYU is now 8-1 on the season and has three games remaining. If BYU wins out they will play in the Big 12 Championship game, almost certainly against Texas Tech. If BYU were to finish 2-1, they would have to rely on tiebreaker scenarios in order to qualify for the conference championship game.
BYU’s first test is this Saturday versus TCU, where the Cougars are currently 4.5-point favorites. The Cougs then finish against 7-2 Cincinnati and 5-4 UCF. The Bearcats also have only one loss in Big 12 play, meaning that could be a de facto play-in game to play in Dallas. Cincinnati entered the rankings this week at #25.
According to FanDuel odds, BYU has +340 odds to make the CFP and -470 odds to miss it, meaning oddsmakers have BYU more likely to miss the playoff.
