Oklahoma Sooners Projected to Win 7.5 Games in 2026 Amid SEC Challenges

The Oklahoma Sooners had an impressive bounce-back season in 2025 after finishing 6-7 in 2024, which was their first year in the SEC. In 2025, the Sooners finished 10-3 and made the College Football Playoff for the first time under head coach Brent Venables, marking their first playoff appearance since 2019.

The team was led by an exceptional defense that ranked sixth in total defense, 32nd in passing yards allowed, third in rushing yards allowed, and seventh in scoring defense. However, the season concluded with a home playoff loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, 34-24.

The team is aiming to improve from last season and is focused on becoming a national title contender in 2026. They will retain several key players, including quarterback John Mateer, wide receiver Isaiah Sategna, EDGE rusher Taylor Wein, linebacker Kip Lewis, safety Peyton Bowen, and two former freshman All-Americans at cornerback: Courtland Guillory and Eli Bowen.

Despite the returning players, Fanduel predicts the team will take a step back this season, setting the over/under win total at 7.5 games for the Sooners. This is tied with another College Football Playoff team from last year, the Ole Miss Rebels. The 7.5 win total suggests concerns about whether the Sooners can replicate last year’s success, particularly as they continue adjusting to the week-to-week grind of SEC competition.

Under Venables, the identity of the team has clearly shifted toward defense. Finishing near the top nationally in multiple defensive categories, Oklahoma proved it could compete physically at a high level. With several key contributors returning, that unit should once again be a strength. However, maintaining that level of performance is never easy, especially with a tough schedule and a target on their back after last season.

Offensively, much will depend on the development of Mateer and the consistency of the passing game. While there is talent returning, the Sooners will need to be more explosive and efficient to take the next step from playoff participant to true national title contender. Replacing production and avoiding regression on that side of the ball will be critical.

Ultimately, Oklahoma has the pieces to outperform its projected win total, but it will need to prove that last season was the beginning of a trend rather than a peak. The 2026 season will serve as a defining year for Venables’ tenure, as the Sooners attempt to establish themselves as a permanent force in the SEC and a consistent presence in the College Football Playoff.
